Fuel Analysis

We provide comprehensive fuel quality testing for diesel and other petroleum products, helping clients verify that their fuel meets specification, identify contamination, and catch problems before they reach an engine or generator.
A typical fuel analysis package includes:
  • Acid Number (ASTM D974) — detects oxidation and acidic degradation products that can corrode fuel system components.
  • Sulfur by EDXRF (modified ASTM D7220) — confirms compliance with ultra-low sulfur diesel limits (≤15 ppm).
  • Microbial Contamination (ASTM D6469) — screens for the bacteria and fungi responsible for tank sludge, filter plugging, and fuel souring.
  • Kinematic Viscosity (ASTM D446) — verifies the fuel will atomize and flow correctly through injection systems.
  • Water Content by Karl Fischer Titration (ASTM D6304) — quantifies dissolved water down to the ppm level, well below the threshold where corrosion and microbial growth become a risk.
  • Cetane Index (ASTM D4737, Procedure B) — estimates ignition quality and combustion performance.
  • Flash Point (ASTM D93) — confirms the fuel is safe to store and handle and has not been cross-contaminated with lighter hydrocarbons.
  • Specific Gravity (ASTM D1298) — a quick density check that flags off-spec or adulterated product.
  • Water & Sediment (ASTM D2709) — measures free water and particulates by volume.
  • Boiling Range Distribution (ASTM D2887) — insight into the composition of petroleum refining process, as well as contamination of gas in diesel or diesel in gas
Samples are typically turned around within 5-7 days from drop-off, and reports include both the measured values and the relevant ASTM acceptance ranges so the results are easy to interpret

Petroleum Product Quality Testing
Lab/Cor Materials regularly tests a wide range of fuels, motor oils, mechanical oils, and transformer oils.  We can provide fast and economical characterization of fundamental fuel properties - such as boiling range determination, flash point, acid number, specific gravity, water content and much more.

Contamination and Failure Analysis
Whether through faulty production methods, accelerated aging or contamination from foreign substances, Lab/Cor Materials is capable of determining what is wrong with your fuel.  Our laboratory can readily test for excessive water, sediment, degradation of oxidation inhibitors and sulfur content, just to name a few.

Developmental Fuel Research
In addition to testing well known fuels, Lab/Cor Materials has focused our expertise on testing developmental fuels from new sources in the ever-changing energy sector.  We have aided a number of customers in the research and verification of petroleum products from biological, renewable, and recycled resources.
